Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has contracted with ETS and Pearson Vue to offer the High School Equivalency Exams through either the General Equivalency Diploma (GED), and the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET).  The HiSET test is available in both paper/pencil and web-based on a computer, and will be administered at the Lawrence ALC Test Center in either format, as well as in English or Spanish.  The GED is available computer-based only in English or Spanish.  Testers MUST go online, create an account, and register and pay for tests at  or  Staff are happy to assist with all aspects of registration through testing.

The Adult Learning Center wants to congratulate our students Oriana Marte and Erick Melo for graduating this year! You did it class of 2020!


To our ALC extended family, in light of the current situation that we are all facing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the entire nation with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have prepared an “ALC Remote Learning plan” for our adult students at the LPS - Adult Learning Center. 

Consistent with MA-DESE guidelines that state: “We strongly recommend that districts and schools focus on reinforcing skills already taught this school year and applying and deepening these skills. We recognize that in some cases, teachers and students may wish to continue with new material, particularly at the high school level. In these cases, districts should consider equity of access and support for all students.”   Under the current situation – less is more.

As a staff, we will continue working remotely to support our adult students, and their learning. But we wish to remind everyone that many of our adult students are: parents, part of a family, living independently, caregivers, still working, unemployed, and may only be able to access learning through a smartphone. Some of our students may also be impacted either directly or indirectly from COVID-19. With that in mind, we offer the following recommendations:

  • We will continue the work with students that began more than three weeks ago;
  • Continue to utilize e-mail, phone calls, texting, Remind, WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Classroom as both a means to communicate/stay engaged with students, and as a platform to support student learning;
  • Utilize the LPS access to Zoom and Google Classroom with LPS e-mail address;
  • Adhere to the “Office Hours” for instruction and support of student learning  
    • Day Time Staff: 9:00am-12:00pm (Monday- Friday) 
    • Afternoon Staff: 12:15pm - 2:30pm (Tuesday - Thursday)
    • Evening Staff: 6:00pm-8:00pm (Tuesday-Thursday)
    • Family Literacy Staff: Tuesday & Wednesday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm
  • Teachers will communicate regularly with students (at least once a week)
    • provide students first with engagement/support, and
    • with instructional support in the form of reviewing previously learned standards, skills, or concepts; and,
    • correct & review student work,
    • refer students to advisors for outside support and resources,
    • Record all contacts with students, and work assigned,
  • Students will remain in contact with their teacher and
    • Provide updated e-mail, and or phone number
    • Share with teachers important information
    • Complete assigned work based on ability
