HLC Tigers Basketball Team with trophies

The HLC Tigers basketball team took third place in the annual GBBL (Greater Boston Basketball League) Tournament at UMass Lowell this week.

The team, coached by HLC teacher Chris Brown, went 7-1 in it's first year of existence. We are very proud of the HLC Tigers and their immense success in their inaugural season.

HLC student Miguel Baez won the league's three-point shooting contest. Students Marquise Vasquez and Luis Ramos were named league All-Stars. Student Brandon Lora won the team sportsmanship award.

For the fourth consecutive year, the High School Learning Center hosted Acceleration Academy during February vacation. HLC teachers were awarded the Sontag Prize in Urban Education and students had the opportunity to prepare for MCAS Exams, earn credit towards graduation, and earn prizes such as gift cards, a laptop, a tablet, and RED Sox tickets

HLC Blue Ambassadors in front of mural

The High School Learning Center introduced and honored its Blue Key Ambassadors during our December Town Hall meeting.

HLC Blue Key Ambassadors are important student liaisons between the HLC administration and new students and their families. The HLC Blue Key Student Ambassador Program is about introducing perspective and new students and their families to the High School Learning Center. Blue Key Ambassador members are integral in showing others who HLC really is and welcoming them into the special community that we are.

HLC Honor Roll students in front of mural

At our monthly Town Hall Meeting, the High School Learning Center recognized its Honor Roll students for Term 1.

We are very happy to announce that 10 students achieved a spot on the honor roll and nine students achieved a spot on the high honor roll.

Congratulations to these students; we hope that you continue your success in Term 2 and beyond.

HLC Entire Class

Students from the High School Learning Center participated in a team building event with staff members at Salisbury Beach State Reservation on Thursday, September 22.

Faculty and students participated in many events at the beach including flag football, volleyball, grilling, s'more eating, swimming, Pokemon catching, Pokemon battling, and a scavenger hunt that encouraged students and staff to get to know each other and build relationships.

The HLC community bonded throughout the day. We were lucky enough to have perfect weather during our first bonding trip as a school. As we embark on the rest of our 2016-17 school year, we now have fun and exciting memories as well as a strong foundation of meaningful relationships to build upon.

We strongly encourage you to check out the HLC Photo Gallery where you can see photos from this event and dozens of previous HLC events.

Please be reminded: the HLC Back to School Open House will take place on Wednesday, September 28 from 6-8pm. The event will include food, open gym, open mic, and a meet and greet opportunity with the school's faculty. We hope to see our students and their families there.
