Introduction:

This work was done using a collaborative process inspired by stakeholder feedback - staff, students, families, and school leaders. The guidelines are meant to cohere the campus experience for all students and staff so that all students will be college and career ready upon graduation. As a united community we will continue to work together to inform, improve, and celebrate our efforts. This is a year of collaborative change, voice, support, understanding, and for us to center ourselves and our policies for and about students.

Research, Data, and Task Force Results that informed the Expectations:

Lawrence High School task force results were used as a guide to develop the expectations that follow. Data from past achievement rates, especially those during our recent stay-at-home order were used. Data from surveys of families, students, and staff were also used.

Who is this Policy for:

All members of the Lawrence High School community. However, there are specific expectations for students and staff detailed below.

Some Helpful Terms
Remote/Distance Learning Remote learning occurs when the learner and instructor cannot meet in a traditional classroom setting.
Online Learning The term online learning is often used synonymously with eLearning. It is an umbrella term that includes any type of learning accomplished on a computer and usually over the Internet.
Synchronous Learning Synchronous learning refers to a learning event in which a group of students are engaging in learning at the same time with their teacher.
Asynchronous Learning Asynchronous learning is a general term used to describe forms of education, instruction, and learning that do not occur in the same place or at the same time. When learners participate in an online learning course at different times, it is known as asynchronous learning. Asynchronous learning allows learners to work at their own pace.
Hybrid/Blended Learning Hybrid/Blended learning is an instructional approach that includes a combination of online and in-person learning activities. For example, students can complete online self-paced assignments by a certain date and then meet on-site or online for additional learning activities.
Video Conferencing Video conferencing refers to the use of video technology (both hardware and software) to create a virtual meeting between two or more people in different physical locations. Participants can see and hear each other through this technology (e.g., zoom).
Zoom Meeting A Zoom Meeting refers to a video conferencing meeting that's hosted using Zoom. You can join these meetings via a webcam or phone.
Virtual Classroom The virtual classroom refers to a digital classroom learning environment that takes place over the Internet rather than in a physical classroom. It is implemented through software (e.g., google classroom) that allows an instructor and students to interact.
Google Classroom Google Classroom is a free collaboration tool for teachers and students. Teachers can create a classroom, invite students to the class then create and distribute.

 

Student Guidelines
Attendance

Fully Remote and Hybrid Schedules:

School hours are from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm - whether remote or in-person, students are expected to follow their schedule and attend all classes.

When attending remotely, all students are required to adhere to LHS’s Zoom expectations

If, for any reason, you are unable to attend the synchronous lesson, you should communicate with your teacher the same day to discuss and determine next steps.
Engagement:

  • Being on-time and present in every class by opening the class link, asking questions and joining breakout rooms.
  • Responding to feedback provided by your teachers
  • Completing assignments by their due date
  • Displaying emotional engagement by using the features in Zoom and Google Classroom
  • Demonstrating visible cognitive engagement - making eye contact, speaking up, and sharing your ideas, thoughts, and insights
     

Actively participate in school pride and wellness events

Grading

Students let's collaborate to:

  • Know that in all models of learning (hybrid or remote), grades will be based on performance on student work
  • production and academic mastery which will include
    • In-class work:
      • Presentations and Discussions
      • In-class work - tasks, practice, mini-projects, labs, short responses
      • Quizzes and Tests
      • Exit ticket/check for understanding
    • Unit Assessments:
      • Project Presentations
      • Tests
      • Papers
  • Complete all assigned work when in-person/on-campus
  • Engage fully in the lesson
  • Complete all assigned work when fully remote
    • Ensure you are clear about the teachers’ expectations on the syllabus
    • Access and make use of virtual/remote learning tools and platforms
    • Proactively reach out to teachers for support during scheduled office hours
    • Work with peers in a constructive way
  • Monitor personal academic progress; check grades frequently (at least weekly) in PowerSchool
     
Navigating Your Learning Environment

Students will

  • Abide by acceptable communication norms
    • Phone calls and texts should be used to contact teachers during office hours listed on the syllabus
    • Email and other one-way messages can be sent anytime but do not expect an immediate response
    • Teachers will make their best attempt to respond within 48 hours
  • Log in to Clever everyday to access your Google Classroom; plan to do this daily starting on the first day of classes
  • Join Google Classroom for all of their classes on the first day of school
  • Utilize office hours to check in with teachers for extra help
  • If you miss an on-line or in-person lesson, it is your responsibility to contact your teacher as soon as possible
  • Actively participate in all academic assignments.
  • Contact your counselor and support staff to help you build successful routines and structure
  • Make efforts to be active
  • Notify teachers if you encounter any challenges or extenuating circumstances.

Family Guildlines
Supporting high attendance and engagement Overall:
  • Ensure the school has updated contact information including phone, email, and home address
  • Assess student wellness each morning before school and keep your child home should they have a fever, cough, bowel distress, cold symptoms, headaches, prolonged fatigue (check LPS language) or other signs of possible illness
  • Reach out to your child’s teachers, advisor, and academy leaders for clarification and assistance
On-line:
  • Where possible, designate a quiet place for students to attend on-line classes, complete assignments, and conference with peers and teachers
  • Help your child establish a balanced daily schedule that allows plenty of time for academic engagement and taking care of family or work responsibilities
  • Frequently check your child’s technology to make sure it is working properly and they are using it properly
  • Become familiar with the resources below, especially “Google Classroom”
  • Ask about your child’s projects and grades
  • Help your child be physically active during the day and promote their social-emotional well-being.
In-person:
  • Ensure your child leaves for school with ample time to start classes at 8:30 am to 2:30 pm
  • If your child will be absent from school, contact the Academy Office as soon as possible.
  • If your child is absent, review their missed assignments and help them contact their teachers/advisor for assistance during designated teacher office hours.
  • Encourage your child to connect with their advisor, counselor, and academy administrators to discuss their social-emotional health and access resources
Supporting academic achievement Your child is expected to
  • Join Google Classroom for all of their classes
  • Follow the newly designed school calendar to attend synchronous teaching with all content areas.
  • Utilize office hours to check in with teachers in the event that extra help, or clarification of assignments is needed.
  • Access class content of synchronous teaching in the event that a student does not make the live session. (Identify central location)
  • Actively participate in ALL academic assignments.
  • Build routines to devote 2-3 hours each day to academic work including classes and school work.
  • Practice wellness in a form that helps individuals maintain a healthy work / life balance.
  • Notify teachers if you encounter any challenges or extenuating circumstances.
