Rollins Early Childhood Remote Learning Family Guide
What is remote learning?

Remote learning can encompass a wide variety of learning opportunities. While technology can be a supportive tool,we will also consider ways that student learning can continue offline. This could include exploring the natural world, activities to support students’ local communities (with appropriate social distancing), and engaging, hands-on projects and artistic creations that stem from students’ own passions and experiences.

Examples of remote learning tools include large-group video or audio conference calls, 1:1 phone or video calls, email, work packets, projects, play ideas, reading lists, online learning platforms, and other resources to effectively engage with students. These tools could be used to deliver lessons, provide individual student support, provide resources (including instructional material and student assignments), connect students to each other and their teacher, and provide feedback on student work.
What is the goal of remote learning?

Support students to engage in meaningful and productive learning for approximately half the length of a regular school day. This learning will take place via a combination of educator-directed learning and student self-directed learning.

Focus on reinforcing skills already taught this school year and applying and deepening these skills. We will focus on practicing skills based on each student’s individual strengths. This will include play based activities, web based learning, and hands on experiences.

The individual student experience will vary depending on student age, individual and family needs, access and capacity for remote learning (including access to technology and internet), and the ongoing health of students, families, and staff.

Remote learning will have a keen focus on best practice for children ages 3-6. We will guide our work with such resources as The NYC Early Childhood Family Activities, LPS Remote Learning Resources and the WGBH Distance Learning Center Prek-k. Other curriculum resources may include Know Atom, CKLA, and Engage NY Math Preschool and Kindergarten. Teachers will share other resources throughout the remote learning time period.
How will remote learning work for my child?
Each school day, teachers will prepare and share a morning message. This morning message will include some work/ play/ activity suggestions for students to complete throughout the day. This will also include time(s) for students to connect with teacher(s) via Zoom as well as how to access recorded lessons. Morning messages will be posted either on Google Classroom, Class Tag, or Remind. Your child’s teacher(s) will be in contact with you to set up their platform/ communication tool.
Students with individual education plans will be provided services as outlined in the Special Education Remote Learning Plan for Educators and Families During School Closure Due to the Novel Coronavirus

Teachers and staff will be in continued contact with all families.
Teachers and staff are available 9:00-12:00 on school days as well as 1:00-3:00 by request.

Students at the Rollins Early Childhood Center are fortunate to work with members of the Kiwanis Club. Each month a group of Kiwanis members come to the Rollins to read to our kindergartners. The Kiwanis Club generously gifted each kindergartner with a sweatshirt, complete with the school's name! We are so thankful for our community partners!

Preschoolers at the Rollins created a "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats using recycled tablecloths and glue. Preschoolers used their feet to create snow footprints with paint.
