The School for Exceptional Studies (SES) is a highly structured alternative educational program that is licensed annually by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a public run therapeutic day school.

Mission Statement:

Student achievement and rich experiences in well-supported classrooms are the priorities around which we at SES focus our work and expectations. Our aim for students is to regularly experience thoughtful and meaningful discussions and opportunities to actively engage in meaningful lessons and practice academic language.  We also aim to provide students with a enriched educational experience through well-planned and meaningful lessons that treat time on learning as precious, and that feature multiple means of accessing the content, multiple means of showing what they know, and multiple means of engagement and interest.  Students experience learning that is culturally vibrant, respectful, and that is compassionate and appropriate to their health and wellness needs.  Students also experience teaching and learning that is thoughtfully and effectively tailored to their needs in terms of their IEP and best practices of Universal Design for Learning.  Our goal for our students is to experience the intellectual, personal, and economic power of embracing education.  We want students to experience a welcoming and warm environment in which they feel safe and encouraged to take appropriate intellectual risks.  Students should experience classrooms free from unnecessary distractions and interruptions, and have opportunities to provide feedback and share ideas about their academic and school experiences.

The School for Exceptional Studies follows the school structure known as shared leadership.  All faculty members are provided with opportunities to participate in committees and the teacher leadership team.

Learning Philosophy:

At SES, our vibrant learning community strives for equitable learning and achievement where every student can learn and succeed.  We prioritize on-grade-level standards, boosting literacy skills, and becoming expert learners.  Students benefit from Universal Design for Learning, attention to their distinct interests and learning needs, and sharing their voices as they grow as thinkers and embrace productive struggle.

Therapeutic Philosophy:

SES aims to challenge students through Project Adventure (PA), a therapeutic support program that provides introspection, positive communication and expression with emphasis on the group process.

SES follows the Six Core Values of PA that are the cornerstone of SES’s behavior modification program.

  • Be Here
  • Be Safe
  • Be Honest
  • Commit to Goals
  • Care for Self and Others
  • Let Go and Move On

August 16, 2022

Hello SES (School for Exceptional Studies) Families!

We hope all of you are enjoying your summer and are getting some much-needed rest and relaxation. Administrative staff, teachers, aides, and custodial staff have been working diligently to prepare our school for the upcoming school year.

We have been working hard processing paperwork, finalizing room assignments, and completing class rosters. Student schedules, homeroom assignments, and a list of team assignments will be shared shortly. We will be posting letters that our teacher wrote to their students and parents/guardians by the end of this week. Additional information can also be found on Family One-Stop.

The North Common Educational Complex’s maintenance team has been working hard to get the facilities in excellent condition. They have worked hard fixing doors, cabinets, and windows. New floors have been installed in the classrooms where it is needed. All the floors have been deeply cleaned and waxed. We are extremely grateful for all the effort that they have put into getting our school ready for the 2022-2023 school year.

There is no need to run to the store to buy school supplies. We will be providing our students with supply bins again this year. The bins will come with a laptop and all the supplies they need to be successful at our school.

If there have been any medical updates such as a change in medicine or an updated physical, please reach out to nurse Denise with the changes.

Finally, I hope all of you are able to enjoy the rest of your summer. We look forward to working with all of you during the upcoming school year. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call our school and we will be happy to assist.

We look forward to welcoming and seeing all SES students on August 29, 2022.

With appreciation,

Erik Desmond                        Angely Alba-Burgos

SES Principal                        SES Assistant Principal
